From research model to operational weather forecast

The iML-WKW development team supports KNMI in operationalizing a new AI weather model: the Stretched Grid Model (SGM). While researchers develop and validate the scientific model, it is up to the development team to make the model reliable, reproducible, and easily maintainable for daily use.

The iML-WKW team supports the technical work required to run the model in practice: automating deployment, monitoring the system, linking data sources, designing the infrastructure, coordinating workflows, and management throughout the operational lifespan. By applying best practices from software development and management (DevOps) and from managing machine learning models in practice (MLOps), the team helps transition innovative AI weather models from experiment to a reliable, operational system.
