A changing climate and increasing pressure on the living environment demand detailed and reliable information to make timely decisions. Optimal utilization of data, computing power, and new techniques is essential for this. This requires multidisciplinary knowledge and collaboration.

iML-WKW offers an open, robust, and future-proof infrastructure for this purpose and makes explainable quality standards available to all sectors working with weather, water, and climate models.

The iML-WKW is funded by the Facilities for Applied Research (FTO) scheme of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, implemented by RVO.

The Netherlands is globally known as a “living lab of the delta.” The iML-WKW is the first national facility of this type for weather, climate, and water in Europe. The three core partners are taking the initiative to form the backbone of an open innovation infrastructure, which universities, innovative companies, and water authorities can also join.

By jointly building this foundation, organizations are prevented from having to make large individual investments in development and testing facilities.

Three Organizations,
Their Own Expertise

Deltares

Independent knowledge institute for water and the subsurface. Lead partner of the consortium. Contributes expertise in water models, digital tooling, and international cooperation.

Rijkswaterstaat

Executive organization of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management. Rijkswaterstaat contributes practical experience with water models for water management and climate adaptation, and works with iML-WKW on its own models of the future.

KNMI

The national knowledge institute for weather, climate, and seismology. KNMI contributes expertise in meteorology and climate, with access to weather and climate data, models, and technology from European cooperation, including within ECMWF.
